I was standing at the tram stop outside East Croydon station a week ago and overheard two young men debating whether The Valet in Addiscombe was a hairdressers or a barbers.
One of the men was adamant that we are a barber shop, whilst the other continued to contest that we were an upscale men’s hairdressers.
Unfortunately I didn’t have time to intervene and guide them towards a fair draw in the debate as my tram had arrived. However, the answer to both of their arguments is simple – we are both offerings at the same time – a hairdresser and a barber under one roof.

The art of classical barbering was starting to become a lost art on the local hight street. However, we have strived to maintain some old school values and services and deliver them at the highest level. This also includes classical men’s hairdressing which can be carried out by a barber OR a hairstylist, providing the latter has decent clipper skills and knows how to taper hair properly. At the same time, modern day men’s hairdressing requires the knowledge of many extra cutting techniques, such as creative scissor work, angling, sectioning, razoring and the texturing of hair.
Here at the Valet we have a good mixture of old school barbers and hair stylists that is very hard to compete with. Only an experienced, old school barber is proficient with the use of a cut throat razor, whilst the modern day hair stylist can strut their stuff on the floor to produce some of the latest hair trends and styles with great ease.
